Your Day in the Barrel

Your Day in the Barrel

I like to use this space to expand on the thought that went into the comic, kind of like watching the directors commentary. I do not normally like to explain the “joke” of the comic, but for some reason I feel like it is appropriate this time.

For those who don’t know, “Your [day/turn] in the barrel” a is an idiomatic expression for being given an unpleasant or even dangerous job. If you pay attention, you will hear this phrase a lot in physically demanding jobs like the military, but you can also hear it in action movies/TV shows, and FPS video games.

The phrase comes from a joke that dates back to at least the 1950’s. While there are many versions, the joke basically goes like this: A new sailor is being given a tour of a boat. He is shown a barrel with a glory hole, which he can use any time, except Tuesdays. When he asks why, he is told: “Because that’s your day in the barrel.”

I just thought it would be funny if Brandon was shown to a barrel. In all honesty, I have not determined what Brandon’s new job is yet, so this incident might not be canon.
