A Brave Decision

I recently switched browsers. I originally was an IE user, but after I switched to Linux, I started using Firefox. Later on I discovered that Chrome worked better with many websites, so I’ve been using that for the past several years.

Recently all has not been well with the Chrome browser. My sync account hasn’t been syncing up lately, and a couple of websites wouldn’t load properly… I had to use Firefox to renew one of my domains!

Well this past week I finally did it. I switch to the “Brave” browser. It’s basically a Chrome knockoff, but those pages that didn’t work, now work just fine again. They also have some extra privacy voodoo going on, but it’s basically Chrome. You can even use the same webstore to install all your usual extensions.

So if you get a chance, check out Brave, or if you’re a Firefox lover, try Pale Moon.

Kudos

Been using Pale Moon for, oh, a couple years now. I haven’t figured out how to get Tagsieve running on it yet (an indispensible tool for people with more than a few hundred bookmarks), but it’s great.

Figure I gotta keep using my name even though ratings are a thing of the past.

I’m not familiar with “Tagsieve”, however I do have hundreds of bookmarks. At the top of my browser, I have the bookmark toolbar visible. In it I have 27 folders. “0-9” and A through Z. I had to manually create them. Then I just file my bookmarks alphabetically. I don’t know if anyone else does it like this, but it makes finding things so much easier.

With TagSieve, you can search for bookmarks by the Mozilla tags. If you get sophisticated you can use tags like “city=Chicago” and if you search for that, everything tagged “city=Chicago” will pop up. There is an implicit “and” so if you search on multiple tags only bookmarks with all tags will pop up.

I have something like 15,000 bookmarks and man do I ever miss TagSieve. I wish I knew JavaScript so I could fix the thing myself.

          “15,000 bookmarks”

OK, I honestly thought my collection was a bit excessive, but 15,000 is basically my entire browser history, and then some. It sounds like a neat system though.

I wish I could help. I used to be able to program a little back in the TRS-80 days, but sadly I never got that far in college. You know that old saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Well, there’s a bit of truth to it. My head just doesn’t wrap around these modern programming languages. It’s like I think I sort of get it, but nope.

          Anyway, best of luck.
