Eccentric Etiquette
There was a recent post to /r/meirl that had an image of Michael C. Hall with the caption, “Sorry for texting you back instantly my phone was in my hand and I’m mature and I actually like you”
Boy did that touch a nerve. So many people were genuinely livid over this, and that’s what inspired today’s (belated) comic.
When I was this generation’s age, we had telephones that plugged into the walls of our homes. Some had answering machines plugged into the wall that acted similar to modern day voicemail. When we wanted to communicate with someone, we would call them on the telephone. Essentially we were just calling their house or home where the telephone was installed, and if they were home they would answer the phone with “Hello,” and we would then have a conversation. If they weren’t home we would either get no answer, or the call would be answered by their answering machine. Leaving a message was still optional just like it is today. Before caller ID, if no one answered, and you didn’t leave a message, no one would ever know that you had called.
It wasn’t better than what we have now, but I think we typically handled it better.
Happy 4th of July.
