I ‘ve got a few friends that I keep in touch with over the internet, and fairly recently one of them sent me an invite to come join him over on Facebook. Now to be fair, I don’t think that most Facebook users are (insert some derogatory reference here). No, I feel that most of them are genuine people who just want to reach out and keep in touch with the people around them.
So I thought, “What could be the harm?” as I merrily added my personal info into their database. I tossed in a few pictures and confirmed that he was indeed a friend.
OK… No problem… But then…
About 11 hours ago Facebook let me know that someone I didn’t want to hear from had added me as a friend. Since this was an unrelated person, the only way I could gather that this individual could have discovered my facebook page was by direct inquiry. They had to have typed my name in. Needless to say, seeing that they just added me as a friend was a little awkward. The more I thought about it, the more uncomfortable it made me. Let’s just say it’s been several years since this person and I had parted ways, and it wasn’t under the most pleasant of circumstance. While I don’t harbor any malice toward them, I don’t want them back in my life either. What gets me is the fact that I’d only had the account for like a couple of weeks… Does this person regularly type in my name like some kind of cyber stalker? It’s just creeeeepy!
I was faced with two options from Facebook: Confirm or Ignore.
So I deleted all my personal info, pictures, changed my e-mail and name, and then deactivated my facebook account.
By coincidence another person from my past also contacted me yesterday to wish me a happy birthday. Although I had not heard from her in a while, this was a pleasant surprise, and I was glad to hear from her.
And yes, yesterday, APR 8, was my Birthday. I am truly older than dirt.
Oh yeah, and I still keep a Myspace page for this site: You can find it at http://www.myspace.com/flush2x and I would love it if you’d send me an invite to be my friend… Just as long as you aren’t a suspected stalker from my past…
