Wow.

I mean it.

Flush Twice got some sudden attention. But not like I intended it.

First of all, Google came back. This was a good thing since Google can only stay relevant  so long as they actually know what’s going on out there.

Then the e-mails came.

The e-mails were informing me that someone had left a comment that required moderation.

commentspam

Here's an actual snippet from my comment spams. It sure didn't take log for the bots to find me. Good thing the comments have to get moderated before they actually post, huh?

Comment #1: 3 links to creatively spelled pharmaceuticals. Duh.

Comment #2: A gratuitous yet nebulous, “good site” compliment followed by a rather long list of pharmaceutical links.

Comments #3 & #4: Both from the same IP, one claiming to be male, the other female, and both thanking me for the wonderful hard to find information I provided… Um… I believe the post was obviously a narrative joke and not anything one would confuse with factual information. So it’s safe to assume that this “smoke up my ass” was to get me to approve their comments so they could directly post spam straight into the blog from here on out. Sorry, but my Turing test says they both failed.

It’s interesting because I’m starting to see a rather large influx of traffic heading into this site now that it’s running WP. Is WP some sort of a spambot magnet? I suppose if it gets too bad, I could always disable comments. It’s not as if real people ever want to use them. No one uses them even on far more popular sites, so I don’t really expect much here.

In other news, something is watching my site now… It’s just not human.

Update:

Just got another couple of e-mails. Apparently the key words are “Jodi Foster” and “AARP”. The former triggers a bot that’s trying to get its foot in the door, and the other is trying to plug online pharmaceuticals.

It’s really quite sad how obvious they are.

Another Update:

I have a new favorite! Attached to the AARP joke was a new comment today: “That’s a very neat picture, where did you take it?”

I’m sure the entertainment value will wear off sooner than later, but it made me chuckle at the meaningless insanity behind the chatterbox rambling.

And yet another Update:

It’s April 4th, and the spam still rolls in for the AARP joke. It’s back to the same old list of links to pharma crap. Yeah… What-ever!

Oh but wait! Something also new! It’s in Russian!
“ммм. интересно !”
It basically means, “interesting”.

I’m thinking I may want to re-title that entry.

Oh for the love of… another update: (hopefully the last)

I’ve had it with the spambots commenting on the AARP post. Comments for that one are now closed! What now bitches?! >:(

{sigh}

OK… So the spambots started in on the other pages… And if you haven’t already figured it out, the result is this: Using the words viagra, cialis, xanax, and others will automatically cause the comment to be classified as spam. In other words, I no longer will even see it.

Next, any posts over 14 days old will be closed for comments. I can’t think of any reason you would want to comment on this shit anyway, but there you go. WordPress’s default settings on comments are pretty much a bad idea, so I think this means that the spambots actually won this round.

One Final Update… (or so I hope)

Using a combination of Akismet and Captcha, I should never again have to fear the dreaded spambots ever again. That’s not to say they won’t keep trying, but now when Flush Twice catches the eye of some tarty bot, it must be able to pass two separate turing tests. So fear not people! The technology is doing some amazing things to bring this wonderful adventure before you and allow you the opportunity to participate! Rejoice!
